Cosmetic Surgery & Health Insurance: What’s Covered and What’s Not

Making the decision to have cosmetic surgery is a big decision. Make sure you know what your health insurance covers.
Cosmetic surgery is a big decision and isn't always covered by health insurance.

Thinking about cosmetic surgery and wondering if your health insurance will help cover the cost? You’re not alone—this is one of the most common questions we get! The short answer: it depends on whether the surgery is considered medically necessary or purely cosmetic.

What’s Typically NOT Covered

Most health insurance plans do not cover procedures done purely to improve appearance, including:

  • Facelifts

  • Tummy tucks

  • Liposuction

  • Breast augmentation (for cosmetic reasons)

  • Nose reshaping (if not tied to breathing issues)

If the goal of the surgery is to change your appearance and there’s no medical reason behind it, insurance won’t pick up the tab.

What MAY Be Covered

If a procedure is done to correct or improve a health condition, it might be covered. Examples include:

  • Breast reconstruction after a mastectomy (federally required to be covered)

  • Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) if drooping eyelids impair vision

  • Rhinoplasty to correct breathing problems

  • Skin removal after significant weight loss, if it causes health issues like rashes or infections

  • Scar revision after an accident or injury

In these cases, your doctor will usually need to provide documentation that the surgery is medically necessary.
