Security. In a word, security is the reason that you buy insurance. Simply put, health insurance provides security against unforeseen circumstances that may result from being ill or injured without some type of plan beforehand. A deductible is the amount of money in a particular policy that you must first spend before your insurance company will begin to cover any costs.

Coinsurance is a percentage that must be paid by the patient before their health insurance company will cover any more expenses. For example: If a person has 20% coinsurance and it costs $100 to get treatment, they would need to pay $20 themselves and the insurance carrier would pay the rest.

A copay is when you see a medical provider at their offices and they provide you with services there are often some costs which need to be paid by patients before leaving the facility.

An out of pocket maximum is the amount you can spend in a year before insurance companies cover all of the expenses.
