💍 Getting Married Out of State? Here’s What to Know About Your Health Insurance

Whether you're planning a destination wedding or saying “I do” in your partner’s hometown, getting married in another state can be an exciting adventure! But amidst the cake tastings and venue tours, don’t forget to check in on something less glamorous—but incredibly important: your health insurance.

✅ Marriage = Special Enrollment Opportunity

Getting married triggers a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). That means you don’t have to wait until Open Enrollment to update or enroll in a new health plan. You typically have 60 days from the date of your wedding to make changes.

🗺️ Your State of Residence Matters

Health insurance plans—especially Marketplace plans—are state-specific. So if you move to your spouse’s state after the wedding, your current plan may not work there.➡️ If one or both of you are relocating, it’s a great time to reassess your coverage.

👯‍♀️ Joint or Separate Plans?

You and your spouse can choose to:

  • Stay on separate individual plans (if it makes more sense for your care or cost), or

  • Combine into a family plan to potentially save money or simplify coverage.

Tip: Always compare plans based on premium, deductible, provider network, and prescriptions.

💡 Other Life Changes?

If your last name, income, or address is changing, make sure to update those with the Marketplace or your insurance provider. Those details can affect your eligibility and premium.
