New-to-Medicare Checklist
Preparing for Medicare is an important step as you approach
retirement. Becoming familiar with the fundamentals ahead of time can ease uncertainty and support a smooth transition.


What Should You Do

12 Months Before You Turn 65
  • Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) begins three months before you turn 65 and continues through the three months after your birthday.
  • Learn about the different parts of Medicare: Parts A-D
  • Mark on your calendar when your IEP begins
9 Months Before You Turn 65
  • Review your current coverage: some coverage works with Medicare, while other plans end at 65
  • Take inventory of your healthcare needs. Make a list of:
    • Current doctors and specialists
    • Prescription medications
    • Ongoing medical conditions
    • Expected procedures or care needs
6 Months Before You Turn 65
  • Continue to work with Lion’s Pride Insurance, your Medicare Advisor
    • Ask your questions
      Understand how Medicare fits into your retirement plan
  • Familiarize yourself with Medicare costs to plan financially and avoid surprises*
    • Medicare premiums
    • Deductibles and copays
    • Prescription drug costs
    • Penalties for late enrollment
*Keep in mind that Medicare plan benefits typically change on January 1 each year. If your IEP starts after that, the plans may be different from what they are right now.
As your Medicare Advisor, we’ll keep you updated, but companies typically don’t release next year’s plan details until October.

4 Months Before You Turn 65
  • Enroll in Social Security and sign up for Medicare Part A & Part B
1 Month Before You Turn 65
  • Meet with your Medicare Advisor to finalize your plan and choose the option that best fits your doctors, prescriptions, budget, and long-term needs.
  • Enroll in a plan that works best for you.
    • Medicare Advantage, or
    • Medicare Supplement (MediGap) with a Part D prescription drug plan (PDP)
